Aerial view of Fig Tree Bay, Protaras — turquoise water and offshore islet

Travel guide · Protaras, Cyprus

Fig Tree Baya Blue Flag jewel of Protaras.

Crystal-clear turquoise water, powder-fine golden sand and an islet 50 metres offshore — one of the most photographed beaches in Europe. The complete visitor guide, with a premium private Mercedes transfer to get you there.

Introduction

The most famous beach in Protaras.

Fig Tree Bay sits in the centre of Protaras, on the south-eastern coast of Cyprus. A crescent of fine golden sand wraps around a sheltered cove of glass-clear turquoise water — and 50 metres from the shore lies a small rocky islet that you can swim to in five minutes. The bay has held Blue Flag status for over three decades, is family-safe thanks to its shallow water, and is consistently named one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean by TripAdvisor and European travel media. The single fig tree from which the bay takes its name still stands at the southern end.

Best time to visit

When to go.

May – June

Sweet spot: air 25–30 °C, sea 22–24 °C, light crowds and full facilities. Sunbeds are easy to find even at midday.

July – August

Peak summer: hot (32–35 °C) and busy. Arrive before 10:00 to secure a sunbed and a parking spot, or come after 17:00 for golden light.

September – October

Warmest sea of the year (25–27 °C), thinning crowds and lower prices. Often the best month of all for swimming.

Best time of day: early morning (07:00–10:00) for empty sand and glassy water, or late afternoon (16:30–sunset) for warm light and a quiet swim.

Parking

How to park (and what to avoid).

Free public parking

Two free public car parks — one at each end of the bay — plus roadside spots along Protara Avenue. Free, but completely full by 10:00 in July and August.

Paid hotel & private lots

Several side-street lots and hotel car parks accept day visitors for €5–€10. The closest to the beach are on Kavo Greco Avenue.

Tip: skip the search

In high season most visitors lose 30–60 minutes hunting for parking. A private Mercedes drops you at the beach entrance and picks you up when you are ready — no parking, no walk, no rental.

Swimming & facilities

What you'll find on the beach.

Swimming & islet swim

Calm, shallow water — safe for children. Confident swimmers can reach the small islet 50 m offshore; bring water shoes for the rocky landing.

Sunbeds & shade

Licensed sunbeds and umbrellas (€2.50–€3.50 each per day). Trees and tavernas provide shade at the back of the beach.

Water sports

Paddleboards, kayaks, pedaloes, jet-skis, banana and parasailing — operators line both ends of the bay from May to October.

Lifeguards & safety

Lifeguards on duty in summer. The bay is sheltered and rarely sees rough waves; flags signal conditions daily.

Toilets, showers, changing

Free public toilets, fresh-water showers and changing cubicles at both ends of the beach. Accessible ramp from the southern car park.

Blue Flag certified

30+ consecutive years of Blue Flag status for water quality, cleanliness, safety and environmental management.
