Aerial view of Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa, Cyprus — crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand and the Nissi islet at sunset

Travel guide · Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Nissi Beachturquoise water, white sand.

Cyprus' most famous beach — a 500-metre crescent of powder-white sand, glass-clear water and a small islet you can wade out to. A complete visitor guide, and a premium private Mercedes transfer to get you there.

Introduction

Why Nissi Beach is Cyprus' most famous beach.

Few beaches on the Mediterranean are as instantly recognisable as Nissi. A perfect crescent of fine white sand wraps around a shallow lagoon so clear that swimmers cast shadows on the seabed from twenty metres up. Just offshore sits its namesake — Nissi, the small island that gives the beach its name — connected to the shore by a sandbar you can wade across in waist-deep water. For families it is the safest swimming bay in Cyprus; for younger visitors it is the heart of Ayia Napa's summer beach-bar scene; and for photographers it is a non-negotiable stop. Blue-flag certified, lifeguarded, and just 45 minutes from Larnaca Airport, Nissi has crowned more "best European beach" lists than any other spot on the island.

About Nissi Beach

History, atmosphere & what makes it unique.

From quiet bay to icon

Until the late 1970s Nissi was a wild, undeveloped cove visited only by local fishermen. The first hotel — Nissi Beach Resort — opened in 1981 and transformed the bay into Ayia Napa's flagship destination.

The Nissi islet

The tiny rocky island that gives the beach its name (nissi means 'island' in Greek) sits 80 metres offshore. A natural sandbar links it to the beach, and visitors love wading across for the panoramic view back.

Blue-flag quality

Nissi has held the European Blue Flag for water quality and safety for decades. Lifeguards, showers, accessible ramps and changing rooms operate from May to October.

Best time to visit

Morning, afternoon & sunset.

Morning (8–11 am)

The water is glass-still and the beach almost empty. Best light for aerial-style photos of the islet and the cleanest sand of the day. Arrive early in July and August to beat the crowds.

Afternoon (12–6 pm)

Peak energy. The beach bars open, DJs play at Nissi Bay Beach Bar, and the lagoon fills with paddle boards, banana boats and pedalos. The atmosphere Ayia Napa is famous for.

Sunset

Crowds thin out, the sand glows gold, and the islet silhouettes against a pink Mediterranean sky. Order a sundowner at one of the beach clubs and stay until the lights come on.

High season runs from May to October. June and September offer near-perfect weather with smaller crowds than July–August.

Activities

Things to do at Nissi Beach.

Swimming

Shallow, calm, lifeguarded water — safe for all ages and one of the safest swims in Cyprus.

Water sports

Jet skis, banana boats, parasailing, paddle boards, pedalos and ringo rides — all rented directly on the sand.

Restaurants

Nissi Beach Resort, beachfront tavernas and ice-cream kiosks line the back of the bay. Fresh seafood, halloumi salads and cocktails all day.

Beach clubs

Nissi Bay Beach Bar hosts famous afternoon parties in July and August with international DJs. Sun loungers, shisha and full bar service.

How to get there

Parking, taxis, buses & private transfer.

Parking

Several free and paid car parks sit directly behind the beach off Nissi Avenue. They fill up by 10 am in July and August — arrive early or accept the walk from the overflow lot.

Buses

The local Ayia Napa bus 101/102 connects the town centre and most hotels to Nissi every 15–20 minutes in summer. Useful, cheap, but slow and crowded at peak hours.

Local taxis

Metered taxis are easy to find in Ayia Napa centre, but fares to Nissi are inconsistent and surge in the evenings. For airport pickups they are rarely cheaper than a pre-booked fixed-price transfer.

Private Mercedes transfer — the easy way

Skip the parking, the heat and the surge fares. We pick you up at the airport or your hotel anywhere in Cyprus — Larnaca, Limassol, Protaras, Paphos, Nicosia — in a spotless Mercedes E-, S- or V-Class, drop you at the beach entrance and return on your schedule. Fixed pricing, 24/7, child seats included.

Cape Greco National Park

Dramatic sea cliffs, hiking trails, the Konnos viewpoint and the famous Blue Lagoon — Cyprus' most photographed swimming spot.

Sea Caves

Carved limestone arches on the coast between Ayia Napa and Cape Greco — sunset here is unforgettable, and cliff-jumping is a local rite of passage.
