Help · Getting around Cyprus

Is Uber availablein Cyprus?

Short answer: not in the way most visitors expect. A neutral, factual guide to what actually works in Cyprus — local taxis, ride-hailing apps and pre-booked private transfers — and how each one compares for airport arrivals, families and late-night travel.

In short

Uber does not run a regular ride-hailing service in Cyprus. The two practical options are licensed taxis (hailed at a rank or via a local taxi app) and pre-booked private transfers (booked in advance with a fixed price and confirmed driver). For airport arrivals, late-night flights and families, a pre-booked private transfer is the most predictable choice.

The Uber question

Why Uber is not a normal option in Cyprus.

Cyprus has a regulated taxi market and a long-established network of licensed private hire operators. Uber has not rolled out a full ride-hailing product on the island, so opening the Uber app at Larnaca Airport — or anywhere else in Cyprus — typically returns no nearby drivers, or no service at all. For most practical purposes, Uber is not a way to get around Cyprus.

That does not mean ride-hailing is unheard of. Local taxi apps such as Bolt and nēpīa, plus traditional dispatch apps used by Cypriot taxi companies, are used inside the bigger cities — mainly Limassol, Nicosia and Larnaca. Coverage is best in city centres and weakest in tourist resorts, villages and at late-night airport arrivals, where there may simply be no drivers logged in.

Service availability changes over time, so the safe approach for a first visit is to plan transport that does not depend on a driver happening to be online at the right moment.

Side by side

Uber vs taxi vs private transfer.

  • Availability
    Uber

Not a regular service in Cyprus; coverage is unreliable for visitors.

    Local taxi

Available at every airport rank and across all cities, 24/7.

    Private transfer

Booked in advance; vehicle and driver are confirmed before the trip.

  • Pricing
    Uber

    Not generally applicable in Cyprus.

    Local taxi

Metered — distance, time and surcharges add up during the ride.

    Private transfer

Fixed price agreed at booking, regardless of traffic or time of day.

  • Airport pickup
    Uber

Not reliable at Larnaca or Paphos airports.

    Local taxi

Available at the official airport taxi rank outside arrivals.

    Private transfer

Meet & greet inside the arrivals hall with a name sign and luggage help.

  • Flight monitoring
    Uber

    Local taxi

    Not included.

    Private transfer

Real-time flight tracking; pickup adjusts to delays automatically.

  • Child seats
    Uber

    Local taxi

    Rarely available on board.

    Private transfer

Baby, child and booster seats provided on request, usually free of charge.

  • Payment
    Uber

    Local taxi

Primarily cash; card acceptance is improving but not universal.

    Private transfer

Cash, card and digital wallets (e.g. Revolut); often payable online in advance.

Generalised comparison for Cyprus. Specific terms vary by operator and may change over time.

Pros & cons

What each option does well — and badly.

Uber / global ride-hailing

Pros
  • Familiar app interface for international visitors.
  • Cashless payment with an account from home.
Cons
  • Not a regular service in Cyprus — generally not available.
  • Unreliable for airport pickups and late-night travel.
  • Not a practical choice for intercity transfers.

Local taxi (rank or app)

Pros
  • Easy to find at airport ranks and in city centres.
  • Good for short, spontaneous trips inside a city.
  • Available 24/7 at major airports.
Cons
  • Final fare depends on the meter and surcharges.
  • Limited card acceptance; mostly cash.
  • Child seats rarely on board; can be hard to guarantee in advance.

Pre-booked private transfer

Pros
  • Fixed price confirmed before the trip.
  • Meet & greet inside arrivals with a name sign.
  • Real-time flight monitoring included.
  • Vehicle class chosen at booking (sedan, luxury, van).
  • Child seats supplied on request.
Cons
  • Needs to be booked in advance — not for spontaneous street pickups.
  • Usually only worthwhile for airport or intercity trips.

Which to pick when

The right option depends on the trip.

Airport arrivals

A pre-booked private transfer is the most predictable choice — meet & greet, luggage help and a fixed price. A licensed taxi from the official airport rank is a solid fallback during the day. Uber should not be relied on at Cyprus airports.

Families with children

Choose a private transfer so a baby, child or booster seat is guaranteed on board. Most local taxis cannot reliably supply one, and ride-hailing apps in Cyprus offer no consistent child-seat option.

Late-night flights

After midnight, taxi availability at the airport rank drops and ride-hailing apps are not a dependable backup. A pre-booked private transfer with flight tracking removes the risk of waiting in an empty arrivals hall.

Fixed-price travel

If knowing the total cost in advance matters — for example for a business trip or to claim back on expenses — a private transfer is the only option that quotes a fixed all-inclusive price before departure.

Short trips inside a city

A licensed taxi or a local taxi app is normally the most convenient and economical option for short urban hops in Limassol, Nicosia or Larnaca.

Intercity travel

For routes such as Larnaca Airport to Ayia Napa, Paphos to Limassol or Nicosia to Protaras, a pre-booked private transfer with a fixed price is the most common choice for visitors.

If a pre-booked private transfer fits your trip, you can request a fixed-price quote on WhatsApp or Telegram — typically confirmed within a few minutes.

Practical notes

A few things worth knowing.

  • Both licensed taxis and licensed private transfer operators in Cyprus are regulated and insured.
  • EUR cash is widely accepted everywhere; card acceptance in taxis is improving but not universal.
  • Children must use an appropriate restraint by Cypriot law — pre-book a transfer if you need a specific child seat.
  • Cyprus drives on the left. The motorway network connects Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia and the eastern resorts efficiently.
  • Public buses exist but routes and frequencies are limited, especially at night and on Sundays.
