Cyprus has a regulated taxi market with licensed drivers and inspected vehicles. Tariffs — base fare, per-kilometre rate and surcharges for night, Sunday, public holiday and luggage — are set by Cypriot regulation, and the final fare is calculated by the meter at the end of the ride.
In practice you'll encounter three styles of taxi service. Street and ranked taxis work best in city centres — Limassol, Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos — where you can flag a passing car or pick one up at an official rank. Airport taxis wait at the official ranks outside Larnaca and Paphos arrivals; only licensed taxis are allowed there. Dispatch taxis are booked by phone or via local taxi apps used by Cypriot companies — useful in suburbs and at unusual hours.
Drivers are required to issue a receipt on request, and the meter must be visible during the ride. If something feels off — an unmarked car, a refused meter, or someone approaching you inside the terminal without a name sign — decline and use the official rank or a pre-booked transfer instead.
