The law in Cyprus
Cyprus follows EU child restraint rules. Any child under 135 cm in height must travel in an appropriate child restraint system — and this applies to every private vehicle on the road, including taxis and private transfers. Children under three may not travel at all in a vehicle that lacks a suitable restraint.
Holding a baby in arms is not legal in a moving car, and the driver carries the responsibility for compliance. Fines start at €85 and police checks around tourist areas are routine in high season.
What taxis actually carry
In practice, most licensed Cyprus taxis do not stock child seats. Drivers will sometimes wave families in without one and tell them "it's only ten minutes" — that is illegal and unsafe. A handful of taxi companies advertise seats on request but availability is unpredictable, especially after a late-evening flight when ranks are thin.
For families, this is the single strongest reason to book a private transfer in advance: the right seat, fitted in the right vehicle, ready when you walk out of arrivals.
The three seat groups
Rear-facing infant carrier (0–13 kg, roughly 0–15 months)
A small bucket-style carrier that clips into an Isofix or seatbelt base. Rear-facing is significantly safer for infant necks and spines in a frontal impact. Required from your child's first car journey.
Forward-facing child seat (9–18 kg, roughly 1–4 years)
A larger seat with a five-point harness. The most common seat we fit for arriving families with toddlers.
High-back booster (15–36 kg, roughly 4–10 years, up to 135 cm)
The vehicle's adult seatbelt is routed through the booster's guides so it sits correctly across the child's collarbone and hips. The high back also provides side-impact protection — preferred over a simple cushion booster.
How many seats fit in one vehicle
- Mercedes E-Class — up to 2 child seats in the rear, plus 2 adults total.
- Mercedes V-Class — 3 or more child seats with room for adults too; the comfortable choice for larger families.
- Mercedes S-Class — 2 child seats in the rear; the right vehicle for VIP family transfers where comfort is the priority.
For families of five or more, or any family travelling with both an infant and an older child, the V-Class is almost always the correct booking.
How we handle it
When you book with Only Cyprus Intercity, child seats are free — always. We ask for each child's age and approximate weight at booking, fit the correct seats before leaving the depot, and confirm them in your booking message. The seats are EU-certified, regularly inspected and kept covered between rides.
If you prefer to bring your own seat from home, that's fine too — we'll fit it for you. Either way, your family is buckled in correctly before we move.
