Larnaca Salt Lake& the pink flamingos.

Each winter, thousands of pink flamingos descend onto Larnaca Salt Lake, turning the shallow waters into one of Cyprus' most spectacular natural sights. A complete visitor guide — and a premium private Mercedes transfer to get you there.

Introduction

One of Cyprus' most famous natural attractions.

Larnaca Salt Lake is a complex of four shallow salt lakes on the outskirts of Larnaca — the second largest salt lake in Cyprus and one of the most important wetlands in the Mediterranean. Each winter it transforms into a mirror of pink: thousands of flamingos arrive to feed on the brine shrimp that thrive in its hyper-saline waters, joined by herons, avocets and over 80 other migratory bird species. Designated a Natura 2000 protected area, the lake is ringed by walking paths, the white-domed Hala Sultan Tekke mosque and the wide approach lights of Larnaca Airport. It is free, it is open year-round and it sits just five minutes from the airport — a pre-flight detour you will remember for a long time.

About the lake

History, wildlife & importance.

Ancient history

Salt was harvested here from antiquity until 1986. Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans all traded Larnaca salt across the Mediterranean. Production stopped to protect the wetland.

Wildlife haven

Home to up to 10,000 flamingos in winter, plus herons, cormorants, avocets, stilts and shelducks. Listed under the Ramsar Convention and EU Natura 2000 network.

Sacred site

On its western shore stands Hala Sultan Tekke, an Ottoman mosque built around the tomb of Umm Haram — considered one of the holiest sites in Islam.

Flamingo season

When to see the pink flamingos.

November

First arrivals from Turkey, Iran and the Caspian. Numbers build through the month.

December

Large flocks settle in. Mild weather and dramatic winter skies.

January – February

Peak season. Up to 10,000 birds — the lake glows pink at dawn and dusk.

March

Final weeks. Flocks thin out as the lake begins to dry and migration starts.

From April to October the lake usually dries out completely into a vast white salt crust — surreal in its own right, but no flamingos.

Best time of day

Sunrise, sunset & photography.

Sunrise

The lake is glass-still and the flamingos closest to shore. Soft pink light from the east, very few people. Arrive 20 minutes before sunrise.

Golden hour before sunset

The classic shot: Hala Sultan Tekke silhouetted, flamingos foreground, sun behind the mosque. Bring a 70–200 mm lens or a phone with optical zoom.

Midday

Harsh light bleaches the pink and birds rest further out. Better for a quiet walk on the nature trail than for photography.

How to get there

Parking, access & private transfer.

Location & parking

The main entrance is on the western shore by Hala Sultan Tekke (Airport Road / Mosque Road). A small free car park sits right at the boardwalk. A second entry point is the Kamares Aqueduct car park on the northern shore.

Accessibility

Flat wooden boardwalks at the main viewpoint — stroller and wheelchair friendly. The 4 km nature loop is unpaved but level. Bring sun protection year-round; the lake has zero shade.
